HALL OF FAME: A RECORD OF NSPRA HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS

R.K. West

R.K. 'Doc' West
Fresno, CaIifornia
Membership Card #738

Robert K. 'Doc' West was born October 31, 1921 in Great Falls,
MT. He attended high school there and spent his summers working
on ranches. His family sent him east to college in Wooster, Ohio,
where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1942. They just knew he was
going to grow up to be a "cowboy".

Doc was in the Marine Corps for four years and was overseas,
serving two years of active combat in Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Doc received his medical training at the University of Minnesota,
returning to Cut Bank, MT to set up a medical practice in 1952. He
also served as a consultant at the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in
Browning, MT.

In 1970, Doc moved from Montana to California where he began
his career at St. Agnes Hospital in the Emergency Department until
1990. He also holds a teaching position at Valley Medical Hospital,
affiliated with the University of California - San Francisco.

Doc is involved in community service in Fresno and Madera
County and received the honorable award of "Physician of the
Year" in 1994. He donates the All Around saddle for the rodeo in
Augusta, MT each year. He has been a member of the PRCA for 20
years and a Gold Card holder for 15 of those years. He competes in
Canada and travels the NSPRA circuit and has qualified for the Finals
every year for nearly twenty years.

Doc and his wife Billie, reside in Fresno and have three children.
Doc's love for rodeo is steadfast, but his love for medicine always
came first.
